“details seldom seen in this newly updated 2019-2020 home”

Seldom seen details. That’s a shame, they’re very nice details! They could have a Van Gogh, Picasso, and Monet ménage à trois on the wall and we’d probably miss it like Steve Wonder to a Bull’s Eye, because we’d be too busy speed dialing the chiropractor to unhinge our L-cocked necks thanks to these dramatic ceilings. This brand of sublime upward beauty makes clouds seem overrated.

They say Looking Up is the key to life’s success. The trouble with a house such as this is that you can never stop looking up, ever, the magnificence is attacking you from the high ground, a constant distraction. The residents must have ten broken toes each. Intricate ceiling treatments are God’s way of telling you that you earn too much money. The Angels burst their vocal chords singing this place into being. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the grounds are great, the windows divine, the details are magnificent…..BUT LOOK AT THOSE CEILINGS!!!

That’s art man. Bravo! Impressed.

“it was originally in Papago Park and was built to house WWII POWs.”

You know Hogan’s Heroes. You’ve likely seen The Great Escape. You are probably aware that there were prison camps during World War II. Did you know there were World War II prison camps right here in America? One of them was in Phoenix, where this house stands. Camp Papago Park housed 3,100 German prisoners of war at its peak population.

America sent Germany’s best and brightest prisoners of war to this specialized domestic prison camp in Phoenix. They did so for fear such men; engineers, leaders, all habitual escapees, would create escape troubles if left in the warzone’s prison system. You’ll never guess what happened when they assembled such a group of breakout talent here!

On December 23rd, 1944, 25 German POWs tunneled there way out of Camp Papago Park. Their 178 foot long tunnel was accessed under the bathhouse, dug out with spoons and screwdrivers by men working 90 minute shifts around the clock. To dispose of the vast amounts of dirt, the sneaky Germans convinced the prison warden to let them build a volleyball court, then later a series of gardens. The tunnel took months to construct, but the finished product was so German engineered it even had full lighting front to back! Vee have vays to makes you walk.

Twas the night before Christmas Eve, and not a creature was stirring, for the spoons were missing. The Germans burrowed out and escaped, one by one, 25 in all.

Now here’s the funny part; In the prison library was a Geography book about Arizona. In the book the entire valley was mapped out, including the Gila, Salt, and Agua Fria Rivers, which were shown as blue rivulets cascading through our valley and down to Mexico. The Germans, being Germans, strategized a stealthy boat ride down river to the southern border. They then designed and constructed a boat, which had been broken down into 18 inch long assembly pieces for carting out the tunnel, which could be assembled to build their escape craft for their Mexican voyage to freedom. They spent MONTHS delicately building this intricate watercraft, which delayed their escape plans.

Those blue lines on the map represent dry river beds, which the Germans soon discovered were not boat worthy, or even wet….oh man, to see the look on their faces at that moment would be priceless. They all got caught wandering about the desert with boat parts. What the Fahrvergnügen!?!

This house was part of that prison camp. Too Cool!

“HEAR THE RECOGNIZABLE ‘PING’ OF BALL & CLUB IN THE DISTANCE!”

Then DUCK reflexively! This house is parked mid-fairway from the tee box, right side. Better swim with a Pith Helmet if I’m golfing nearby.

Ping! CRASH!

“Pardon me, have you seen my balls today?”

Old House. New Parts. Timeless view of Camelback Mountain. That’s not just any golf course out there. This is THE PHOENICIAN. Grassy hole Architect Phil Smith has created a cohesive 18-hole course, with no surprise bunkers or blind hazards (sorry Stevie Wonder) which showcases the Sonoran desert’s finest hand cut lawns…and this old house parked alongside of it.  A discerning Realtor would gripe that the builders went cheap on too many details in this Chip and Joanna clone. Thank God I’m not one of those!
